Merab Dvalishvili to serve as UFC 299 backup for Sean O'Malley vs. Marlon Vera

Merab Dvalishvili is ready to take over if something goes wrong during the final hours before the UFC 299 Main Event.

The main attraction of the pay per view event, taking place in Miami on March 9, is a bantamweight championship fight between champion Sean O’Malley vs challenger Marlon vera. Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA and 10-2 UFC), who is preparing for a trip to Florida, plans to weigh in on Friday morning as a backup fighter. Oren Hodak, of KO Reps, confirmed the news Tuesday evening to MMA Junkie.

In the past, UFC usually assigns a backup fighter to fight for a title, but so far, they have not needed their services.

Dvalishvili has won 10 consecutive fights, including three straight wins over former UFC champions. Dvalishvili’s last fight at UFC 298 took place less that three weeks ago. He defeated the former two-division champ Henry Cejudo by a unanimous vote to earn No. 1 contender status.

“Whoever will be champion, I’m going to face him next,” Dvalishvili said during his in-cage post-fight interview. “I’ve been calling Sean O’Malley since 2018. … My only goal is for the title…
