Vergil Oriz Jr. won the first round of their fight against Frederick Lawson via TKO. The match was broadcast live by DAZN in Las Vegas from Virgin Hotel. Referee Tony Weeks ruined the night with an ill-judged premature stoppage.
Ortiz, who pushed his undefeated professional record to 20-0 with the win, was the betting favorite to take care of business this weekend in “Sin City.” However, the last time Ortiz fought was back in Aug. 2022 when he knocked out Michael McKinson in Texas. Fight fans didn’t know for sure if Ortiz would carry any ring rust into this fight.
Fortunately, the 25-year-old didn’t miss a beat. He found his range in the first round and was able a few good shots. Ortiz began to show more aggression in the second round, landing a series of punches along the ropes. Lawson was bobbling and weaving but got clipped on the way.
Weeks must have believed that the punches landed harder than they actually did. He separated Ortiz and Lawson quickly, putting an end to the fight before Ortiz could show off his skills.
